MacZones

Privacy

Privacy, in plain language.

MacZones is a native Mac app made by a small team in Utah. We built it to rearrange your windows, not to learn about you. This page describes, honestly and specifically, what data the app and this website touch — and what they don't.

Last updated: May 24, 2026.

TL;DR

Summary

  • The app has no telemetry and no account. We don't know you installed it.
  • Your layouts, profiles, sessions, and window positions stay on your Mac.
  • MacZones checks for updates over the network. That check unavoidably exposes your IP address and current version to our update server. We don't link those logs to a person and we discard them on a rolling basis.
  • If you buy a license, our payment processor sees what they need to take a payment. We see an email, a license key, and the country on the receipt — nothing more.
  • Crash reports are off by default. If you turn them on, they contain a stack trace and macOS version, never window contents.
  • If you email us, we keep the email so we can reply to it.

App

On your Mac

Accessibility permission

  • macOS requires the Accessibility permission for any app that moves or resizes other apps' windows. MacZones uses it for exactly that: reading window frames, app identifiers, and display geometry so it can position windows where you ask.
  • The app does not read window contents, keystrokes outside its own hotkeys, clipboard data, or screen pixels.
  • Everything the app learns about your windows stays in memory or in local files on your Mac.

What stays on your Mac

  • Layouts, zones, per-display profiles, hotkey bindings, and saved sessions are stored under ~/Library/Application Support/MacZones and ~/Library/Preferences.
  • None of this is uploaded anywhere. There is no cloud sync. If you reinstall macOS without a backup, these files are gone — that's the trade-off for not having a server.

Update checks

  • The app periodically asks our update server whether a newer build exists. That request includes the app version, the macOS version, and the CPU architecture (Apple Silicon or Intel). Our server, like any web server, sees the connecting IP address.
  • We use those logs to confirm that updates are reaching people and to debug bad releases. They are not joined to anyone's identity and we rotate them out within 30 days.
  • You can disable update checks entirely in MacZones → Settings → Updates.

Crash reports

  • Crash reporting is opt-in. Until you turn it on, the app never sends a crash report anywhere.
  • If you turn it on, a report contains the stack trace, the app version, the macOS version, and a randomly generated install identifier so we can group repeats. It does not contain window titles, app names, file paths from your home folder, or anything you typed.
  • You can revoke the setting at any time and we'll stop receiving anything from that install.

No telemetry, no analytics, no ads

  • The app does not include analytics SDKs, ad networks, A/B testing tools, session recorders, or third-party trackers of any kind.
  • There is no account system. We do not have a user database. We cannot “look you up” because we have nothing to look up.

Purchases

Licensing

  • License purchases on this website are handled by Paddle, our Merchant of Record. Paddle collects your name, email, billing address, and payment details to process the order and remit the right taxes. Their handling of that data is governed by Paddle's own privacy notice.
  • What we receive back from Paddle is limited to: an order ID, your email, the country on the receipt, the product purchased, and the license key we issued. We use that record to email you the key, to honor refunds, and to reissue keys if you lose them.
  • License activation in the app sends the key, a hash of your hardware identifier, and the app version to our license server so we can mark a seat as used. It does not send your name or email.
  • If you request a refund, your order record is retained for the period our accountants and tax authorities require, then deleted.

Website

This site

  • This website does not set tracking cookies. There is no analytics script, no pixel, no session recorder.
  • Our host writes ordinary web server logs (IP address, requested URL, user agent, timestamp) to defend against abuse. These are retained briefly and not used for marketing.
  • The page loads Google Fonts for typography. Google receives the IP address of your browser when it fetches the font files. We don't pass anything else to them.
  • If you click a mailto: link to write to us, that happens in your mail client — we receive only what you choose to send.

Email

Support inbox

  • If you email hello@maczones.app, your message is stored in our inbox so we can read it, reply to it, and search it later. We use a mainstream email provider for hosting.
  • We don't add support emails to a marketing list. There is no marketing list.
  • You can ask us to delete a thread at any time and we will.

Rights

Your data

  • You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to send you a copy, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@maczones.app from the address tied to the record. Allow a few business days — we are a small team and we read every email by hand.
  • Depending on where you live (GDPR in the EU/UK, CCPA/CPRA in California, similar laws elsewhere) you may have additional statutory rights. We honor them in the same channel.
  • Because the app holds no personal data on our servers, “delete my data” in practice means deleting your purchase record and any support email threads. The app's local files are yours to delete from your own Mac.
  • MacZones is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

Updates

  • If we materially change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of the page and call it out in the next release's changelog.
  • Earlier versions are available on request.
